Sunset PTA Committees
Welcome to the list of Sunset PTA committees! As you can see, we have many committees this year, each having a distinct and important objectives. In order to meet all of our objectives, we need lots of help from many parents. Please review the list and look for committees that interest you. Program Committees
Be Healthy, Be Strong (Open)- This is the catch-all program for all activities designed to improve the children’s eating habits, cafeteria food, exercise, etc. Actual activities to be determined after input from teachers, parents and the administration.
Book Swap (Lisa Mishurda)- Every week in the PTA store, every student who brings in a book can swap it for another book. This is a great way to get your child reading new books without having to pay any money.
Cultural Arts (Catalina Jacobs-Fernandez) - Assist with school cultural arts activities, authors’ visits, etc. Occurs all year.
Fitness Day (Christie Wolfe) – Our day to promote healthy, active lifestyles for the children. Assist with exercise course set up and execution, refreshments, facilitate children getting to and from classes, etc.
Health & Wellness Committee (open)– Committee designed to oversee improvements and enhancements to the health and wellness of our children. This committee has close ties to these related committees: Earth Day Planting, Green Room, Adopt-a-Garden, Campus Clean-up, Be-Healthy Be Strong, Safety Chair, and Let's Fight Flu Together! Vaccine Day.
Recycle of Required Reading Books (Kaitlin Weatherly) - Having families bring in the required reading books from last year and then distribute them to the students the following year that do not have the new books.
Reflections (Catalina Jacobs-Fernandez) – Our contest to celebrate the creative artist within our children. Assist with the promotion, collection of entries, enlisting the community for judges, preparing, winning entries to send to the district PTA.
Sunshine Program (Mayelin Diaz de Villegas) - Assist in the distribution of birthday and special occasion cards to faculty and staff. Occurs all year.
Fundraiser Committees
Book Fair (Tammy Huynh & Ines Cano) - Assist with set up, sales, restocking at this Scholastic Book Faire. We need lots of volunteers to help with books sales, as it is a popular event. The book faire is open during the entire school day during the event. Occurs in September and the spring.
Boxtops for Education (Janine Tenaille & Ana Marie Delgado) - Assist with the collection of boxtops from the classrooms, organizing contests, gathering prizes, etc. Occurs all year.
Target Red Card (Susana Moro) - For every person who signs up for the Target Red card and designates Sunset Elementary school, our school will receive a percentage of sales.
Holiday Shoppe (open) - Assist with marketing, set up, sales, restocking at the Holiday Stoppe. We need lots of volunteers to help with sales, as it is a popular event. The Holiday Shoppe takes place the first week of December.
Fall Fundraiser (Susana Moro) – Our main fundraiser for the year. Promote sales, sort orders, distribute merchandise, organize Mega Party and other rewards. Occurs in September and October.
Marlins Game (Christie Wolfe) – A really fun fundraiser where the PTA will receive money for every person who attends the designated Marlins game.
PTA Store (open) - Assist in the sales at the PTA store and with stocking items, filling and delivering orders, determining when to re-order, etc. Occurs all year.
School Supply Kits (Lisa Mishurda) - Coordinate the ordering and distribution of school supplies. Ordering occurs in the spring; distribution occurs at the start of school.
Spring Bazaar (Ms. Campos, Lisa Mishurda) - This year the PTA will sponsor a Spring Bazaar that will bring many vendors to the school to sell their wares.
General & All-Year Committees
Communications (Karla Ebenbach) – Create and distribute emails of current and upcoming PTA events to blast to the distribution list. Maintain distribution list.
Direct Donation Program (Open) – Help determine and distribute forms asking families/businesses if they are interested in donating directly to some of the large programs we have planned for the year. Occurs all year.
Legislative Advocate (open) – Help advocate for funds for Sunset Elementary in the various committees of the Florida legislature. Help solicit and prepare ‘calls to action’. Occurs all year.
Lost and Found (Janine Tenaille) - Maintain the lost and found area, send reminders to parents, arrange for periodic donation of unclaimed items. Occurs all year.
Marketing (Kaitlin Weatherly) - Help create and distribute information about PTA programs and fundraisers. Help develop content for the Sunset PTA website. Help manage the ‘What’s Happening at Sunset bulletin board. Occurs all year.
Membership (Maria Frontela) – Promote membership within our school and community. Maintain membership database and hold activities to increase membership. Occurs all year.
PTA Directory (Open) - Assist in production of Sunset Directory; distribute directories. Occurs in October and November.
Room Parents Liaison/ Volunteer Coordinator (Mimi Somoza (Spanish & lead), Ilaria Belloni (French), Daniella George (German)) - Assist teachers in finding volunteers for specific projects, educate room parents on roles and responsibilities, plan class parties, etc. Assist with volunteer enrollment, and helping to get volunteers for events when necessary. Maintain database of volunteers. Occurs all year.
School Spirit (Kaitlin Weatherly) – Various activities to build school spirit at Sunset. This committee will start with a contest to create a new school mascot with an international flair. Use the new mascot to create a school logo which can be used on t-shirts and other items to help promote a sense of pride in belonging to the Sunset family. Occurs all year.
Social Committee (Christie Wolfe) – Committee to provide food and drink at the various programs and fundraisers. Assist with various projects to provide special recognition throughout the year to Sunset staff. Occurs all year.
Sunset Open House (open) – Organize the PTA table at the Sunset Open House. Help set-up the PTA store table with a limited selection of items. Occurs in September.
Sunsetter (Rosana F. Brijbag) - Assist with editing or distribution of the newsletter. Occurs all year.
Webmaster (open)
Maintains PTA website. Update PTA website as new content is available. Occurs all year.
